When Michel Became a

Umbraco Certified Rockstar

As a participant on The Voice of Germany 2012, byte5 developer Michel Schmied was on #TeamNENA - during his training as a IT specialist for application development with a specialisation in Umbraco, he was on # TeamBYTE5. An interview with Michel.

Now the Umbraco Certified Rockstar finished his training and is awaiting new adventures, whether they’re technical or musical. In our interview, Michel talks about his time at byte5 and his love for music.

From Being on The Voice to Being an Umbraco Certified Rockstar

Rock music is his passion, coding is his chosen profession. Michel Schmied’s Portfolio is chock-full of musical and technical experiences. He had the opportunity to connect these two pillars of his life last year when Michel performed at the Umbraco Festival Germany, hosted yearly by byte5 – the only way he knows how to: singing. Along with his band, Michel gave a memorable gig and was awarded the title Umbraco Certified Rockstar by his colleagues.

But these days, it’s time to say goodbye: Michel’s has completed his trainings at byte5 – now the whole world is his to concur with new and exciting projects. Before he leaves, we sat down with Michel for an interview to recollect his time with us at byte5.

Interviewing Michel

Michel, how does it feel to be the – probably only – Umbraco Certified Rockstar?

That’s such a cool thing! I’m so excited that my former byte5 colleagues awarded me with this special title. I will always cherish it.

Are there any similarities between your two major interests: music and developing?

Definitely: When you make music, the songs also get developed.

…and between our personal experiences at The Voice of Germany and byte5?

Yeah, well, first you go through a casting process, then you have a mentor and you get coached in both. 😉

What is the most appealing thing about being a developer?

I like how you always learn something new and computer science is always changing. It never gets old or boring.

Could you imagine making music full-time?

That’s a lovely thing to imagine, but unfortunately not an easy one to put into action. Maybe one day I’ll make it. 😉 Until then, I’m happy being a developer.

Is there a special thing that happened at byte5 which you won’t forget so soon?

I always really liked the bond we shared. I liked the stuff we did when we weren’t at work just as much, like board game night in our conference room or going to a local karaoke bar. That was always cool.

What do you like best about Umbraco?

What I like about Umbraco is how clearly it’s structured. There’s nothing worse than having to look for something until you maybe find what you were looking for.

I also like the friendly community. While I have never used it myself, I often saw how willing to help the community is when you have a question or you’re stuck.

Which wishes/plans do you have for your (professional) future?

I hope I will like things at my new employer, that we get along well and that work is fun.

What's Next for Michel

Whatever his plan, we’re certain: Michel will rock it! We wish the new computer specialist for applications development and Umbraco Certified Rockstar all the best for his (professional) future. And one thing is for sure: We will still hear a lot from Michel.
