The gateway to the next generation of automation
The shift from chatbots to agents is happening right now. OpenAI has hired Peter Steinberger, the founder of OpenClaw, to drive the development of the next generation of personal agents. At the same time, OpenClaw is set to continue as an open-source project under a foundation supported by OpenAI. Meta is also embracing this trend and has positioned Manus as an agent project, integrating it into its platform ecosystem.
byte5 is involved in this because we see open source as the best way to combine innovation with control. We stay abreast of new developments, and that is precisely what our customers value about us. Because we don’t just stand by and watch; we test, assess risks and develop an approach that suits our customers. OpenClaw gives us the opportunity to manage agent infrastructure ourselves, rather than being tied to closed platforms.
Peter Steinberger has a bold vision: rather than simply using AI as a chatbot, he wants it to actually carry out tasks. And to achieve this, Steinberger has laid the groundwork with OpenClaw, which was originally called Clawbot. OpenClaw is an open-source AI agent framework that allows you to control agents via chat and equip them with skills so that they don’t just respond, but actually perform tasks within your systems.
We have been using and exploring OpenClaw ourselves in an internal sandbox since a very early release, even before it came to the attention of the wider public. Our CEO, Christian Wendler, and our CTO, Marcel Wege, are already fully immersed in it, testing workflows, pushing boundaries and focusing specifically on what really matters in the end: control, reliability and utility. After all, these three factors are key to determining the solution’s suitability for use in businesses.
What’s particularly exciting is that OpenClaw is designed to be model-agnostic. You can use different AI models and tailor the setup to suit your requirements. It feels like a toolbox for agent automation, not just another tool that locks you into a single platform.
When AI agents do more than just write text – when they actually carry out tasks – it fundamentally changes processes. Suddenly, it’s no longer about receiving information, but about getting results. OpenClaw provides a solid foundation for this, as it allows you to combine automation with control without getting stuck in a black box.
An AI chatbot generates text. OpenClaw can perform tasks because you equip agents with skills. This brings automation to your workflows.
OpenClaw can orchestrate workflows across systems; in our case, for example, across Odoo, Jira and Teams.
Open source and model-agnostic. You choose the platform, data flow and AI model to suit your requirements. This reduces dependencies and strengthens data sovereignty.
The agent doesn’t just wait for your prompts; it can respond independently and notify you as soon as something needs attention. This means processes can continue to run smoothly without you having to constantly nudge them along.
At byte5 labs, we are exploring how OpenClaw can be implemented in a practical way within organisations. Not as a demo, but as a robust foundation. The focus is on security, governance and control over operations and data.
Data sovereignty
You decide which data can be sent where, what remains local, and what is logged.
Permissions
You decide which skills can be used, who approves actions, and how control is maintained throughout the process.
Operation
On-premises, in your cloud, or a hybrid solution. Whatever works best for your security, compliance and IT needs.
We’ll explain where OpenClaw really stands to benefit you and where you’re better off waiting a bit longer.
We’ll walk you through data sovereignty, permissions and operations so that you can make informed decisions.
You’ll come away with a clear plan of action, such as initial tests, a pilot project or an architectural concept.
OpenClaw is developing rapidly. It already makes sense to use it for certain use cases – particularly where automation offers clear added value and the conditions are right. We can help you assess exactly that.
OpenClaw is model-agnostic. You can use GPT, Claude, local models or other providers – depending on what best suits your requirements in terms of data privacy, performance and cost.
Basic technical knowledge is sufficient for the initial installation. For professional business use – involving your own expertise, security strategy and integration into existing systems – we recommend professional support. That is exactly what we do.
We’ve been using OpenClaw ourselves since hardly anyone had heard of it. We’re not consultants who give PowerPoint presentations – we’re developers who build systems. And we always think in terms of architecture, operations and control.
Yes. At byte5.ai, we offer standalone AI tools that are ready to use straight away. The services on byte5.de and the products on byte5.ai complement each other: if you need bespoke solutions, this is the place for you. If you want to get started straight away, you’ll find the right tool on byte5.ai.
OpenClaw already has an enthusiastic fanbase of pioneers and innovators who have practically snapped up all the Mac Minis just to run the first exciting experiments with OpenClaw on them. That’s why we’re organising this meetup to create a space where we can come together and share our experiences. Anyone interested is very welcome to join us.
byte5 specialises in open-source technologies and builds robust, scalable digital platforms for demanding environments. Our clients appreciate that we stay at the forefront of innovation, yet assess it pragmatically and translate it into manageable next steps. This is precisely why AI agents and OpenClaw are a perfect fit for us: we focus on architecture, operations and control, so that you can capitalise on new opportunities without getting bogged down in dependencies.
